The Syriac Orthodox Church is one of the oldest Christian churches in the world. Its faith and traditions go all the way back to the time of the Apostles and have been passed down from generation to generation until today. Throughout history, many holy men and women have lived in this Church — saints, martyrs, monks, and spiritual leaders — who showed great faith, deep humility, and true love for Jesus Christ. In times of peace and in times of great suffering, they stayed strong in their faith and shared the message of the Gospel not only through their words but also through their actions, even when it cost them their lives. He established seven churches in Kerala and preached the Gospel with great zeal. His missionary work laid the foundation for the ancient Christian community in India. St. Stephen holds the honor of being the first Christian martyr—the protomartyr—who sealed his faith with his blood around 35 AD. Filled with divine grace and power, Stephen performed great wonders and signs among the people. When brought before the Sanhedrin, his face shone like that of an angel as he testified to his vision of the glorified Christ standing at the right hand of God. Rather than recanting his faith, Stephen was dragged outside Jerusalem and stoned to death. His martyrdom marked the beginning of persecution against the early Church, yet it also exemplified the triumph of faith over fear. He endured tremendous suffering while maintaining unwavering faith and eventually was martyred. St. George became a symbol of spiritual warfare and triumph over evil, often depicted as a warrior saint. His intercession is sought by the faithful in times of spiritual struggle and persecution. The Syriac Orthodox Church honors his memory and celebrates his feast with reverence, recognizing him as a powerful witness to Christian martyrdom and steadfast faith.

Known for his ascetic lifestyle and tireless pastoral care, he earned the epithet "Burdono" (the Cloaked One) because he traveled throughout the Byzantine Empire disguised in ragged clothing to avoid detection while secretly consecrating bishops and preserving Orthodox apostolic succession. Through his unwavering commitment to the faith once delivered to the saints, Jacob ensured the continuity of the Syriac Orthodox Church through one of its most perilous periods. His legacy remains a testament to faithful leadership and apostolic dedication.

Apostolic Heritage

The Syriac Orthodox Church traces its foundation to the Apostolic era, established by St. Peter the Apostle in Antioch around 37 AD. As one of the ancient Oriental Orthodox Churches, we maintain the unbroken apostolic succession and the sacred traditions passed down through generations of faithful bishops, monks, and martyrs.

Monastic Tradition

The desert fathers and mothers of Syria pioneered the monastic way of life, seeking union with God through prayer, fasting, and solitude. This ascetic tradition continues to flourish in our monasteries, where monks and nuns dedicate their lives to contemplation, liturgical prayer, and spiritual warfare.

Miaphysite Christology

We confess the faith articulated by St. Cyril of Alexandria: "One nature of the Word Incarnate" (Mia Physis). This Orthodox Christology affirms that our Lord Jesus Christ is perfect God and perfect man, united in one nature without confusion, change, division, or separation. This is the faith of Nicaea, Ephesus, and our Holy Fathers.
